In order to have borrowing rights in the AUEB Library, you must be an active member of the AUEB academic community (student, professor, researcher, administrative staff). - Borrowing and Returning Books
-
You can borrow books from the University's collection of textbooks and research books using the self-service kiosk which is located in the entrance of the Reading Room. Please remember to have your university identity card with you if you want to borrow books. Always take your receipt for your borrowing transactions so that you will know when you must return the books that you have borrowed. At the same kiosk, you can see the status of your account in the Library (which books and how many books you have borrowed and if there are any fees outstanding because of late returns.) You can also return the books that you have borrowed, without the requirement of showing your university identity card. If you need assistance or more information, please talk to the library staff in the Reading Room. Borrowing and returns are done only during the days and hours that the Library is open.

- How can I monitor my borrowings?
-
You can inquire about the status of your account with the on-line service "My Account". To log into your account, the barcode on your academic identity card is required as well as a PIN number which can be created when you log in. You can also get this information from the self-service kiosk which is located in the Reading Room, selecting "Account" or by requesting assistance from the staff on the circulation desk in the Reading Room.
- How can I renew the items that I have borrowed?
-
You can renew items that you have borrowed if those items are categorized as research books or as extended borrowing books (1 month). You can renew these items for one time only according to the terms of borrowing. University textbooks and research books that are "Reserved" are in the short-term borrowing category and cannot be renewed. You can renew your borrowed items on-line with the "My Account" service by selecting Items Currently Borrowed and then either renewing all items that you have borrowed or selecting specific items for renewal. You can also renew your borrowed items by telephone to the circulation desk at 210 8203 265.
- Can I reserve a book that is currently borrowed by another user?
-
You can reserve a book from the Library Catalog (Online Public Access Catalog) only if the book is currently borrowed by another user and as long as you have an active account at the Library. Select "Request" when reserving the book that you want and follow the online instructions. You will need the barcode on your academic identity card and your PIN which you can create while you are logging into the system if you do not already have a PIN.
- How can I find my reserved books?
-
If the book has been returned within the time frame that you have specified, you will be notified by email, at the email address that you have given to the Library. You can also get an update on the status of the books that you have reserved using the online service "My Account". You can see if the book has been returned to the library by the prior user as well as the date by which you can get the book from the circulation desk at the entrance of the Reading Room. In the event that you do not come to the Reading Room to pick up the book on the date specified, the book will be returned to the collection in the library on the following day.
- How can I cancel any reservations of books that I have made?
-
You can cancel a reserved book using the service "My Account". In the same service you can cancel all the reserved books that you have requested if they no longer interest you. You can also request cancellation of a reserved book from the staff on the circulation desk.
- How can I avoid paying fines?
-
It is important to keep a note of when the book or books that you have borrowed must be returned. At the self-service kiosk, you should always receive a receipt with the return date for every book that you have borrowed. It is your responsibility to return the books on time. It is very important that the books which are in high demand and which are in the category of "Reserved Books" be returned on time as there is no possibility to renew them and they are usually included in the lists of books reserved by other users.
Please check your emails regularly as the Library sends out late return notices in the event that you have neglected to return a book.
The Library also sends notifications in the event that a book that you have borrowed has been reserved by another user. If the book has been recalled and the return date is now earlier than the original return date, then the Library will notify you of the new return date. This is usually 7 days from the day that the book was recalled. The book must be returned by the new return date, otherwise there will be a fine of 0,30 euro per day for every item that has been recalled.
When you do your borrowing transactions at the self-service kiosk, please always ask to get a printed receipt.
- What happens if I lose a book that I have borrowed?
-
To begin with, please be sure that the book is actually lost before you report it as lost to the Library. According to the borrowing terms and conditions, you will be charged for the cost of the replacement of the book. Please be very careful with the books that you borrow and return them in the same condition in which you have borrowed them as they are public property and will be used by other borrowers after you.
