AUEB’s MMlab has a new project in association with the University of Memphis, as part of EU’s Next Generation Internet initiative
A new research project at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) in association with the University of Memphis entitled «Self-Certifying Names for Named Data Networking» (SCN4NDN), has been selected for funding from the H2020 project NGIAtlantic.eu.
NGIAtlantic.eu is part of the European Union’s NGI Initiative which aims to develop collaborations between EU and US research teams on the technical challenges raised by building a human-centric Next Generation Internet (NGI), that embodies the values that Europe holds dear, including openness, inclusivity, transparency, accountability, cooperation, protection of data and information, and freedom.
The SCN4NDN project was awarded to the Mobile Multimedia Laboratory (MMlab) of the Department of Informatics at AUEB, with Professor George C. Polyzos, Lab Director, as the Primary Investigator, Professors George Xylomenos and Vasilios A. Siris, post-doctoral researchers Nikos Fotiou and Yannis Thomas, and Ph.D. candidate Ioakovos Pittaras. The Primary Investigator from the US side is Professor Christos Papadopoulos, Sparks Family Chair of Excellence in Global Research Leadership at the University of Memphis.
The goal of the project is to apply self-certified names to information-centric networks. Specifically, the project will develop and experiment with a novel solution based on the new World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standard for Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs), which are under the exclusive control of the end users and not service providers. The main objective of the project is to execute experiments on the NDN testbed, a worldwide experimental network based on an information-centric architecture with the University of Memphis being one of its main contributors.
The new project exploits fundamental research on information-centric architectures for the Future Internet which has been ongoing at the MMlab for more than a decade and has led to important publications with a very large number of citations, as well as recent research on distributed and self-sovereign identifiers.
