Alexandros Zimbidis studied Mathematics at the University of Athens, graduating with distinction (Excellent). He continued his postgraduate studies in London on a scholarship, earning a Master’s degree with distinction and a PhD in Actuarial Science from City University. He holds a Professional License as an Actuary, the Certificate of Actuarial Techniques from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) and is a member of the Hellenic Actuarial Society.
He has worked for several years as an actuary and senior executive in a major multinational insurance company, while also conducting numerous actuarial studies for pension funds, corporations, and other organizations. From February 2003 to March 2005, he served as the first President of the National Actuarial Authority. During 2013–2014, he was a special advisor to the Bank of Greece, coordinating the project for preparing the Greek insurance market for the Solvency II regulatory framework.
He has published original research in international scientific journals and conferences, with a particular focus on the analysis of insurance and pension systems. His work has received special recognition and citations from actuarial associations abroad, including the Institute of Actuaries of Japan, the Casualty Actuarial Society (USA), and the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries (UK). He is the author of six university textbooks, a reviewer for international scientific journals, and a Reviewer for the American Mathematical Society. In the academic year 2022–2023, he was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award by the Department of Statistics.
He is currently an Associate Professor of Actuarial Science at the Department of Statistics, Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), while also providing consulting services to companies and professional associations on pension and insurance matters.
