Presentation of the Department of Statistics - AUEB to Schools

In the framework of the Academic Openness and School Community Information Program, the Department of Statistics has carried out, for the first time, the following actions:

  1. Online information session for School Units.
  2. Educational Visits of Secondary Schools.
  3. Professor visits at Secondary Schools.

Action 1 has been carried out with two online sessions, with the participation of 40 schools and about 1200 students. It is worth mentioning that schools from Cyprus have been also participated in this activity.

Action 3 has been carried out with two educational visits at Secondary Education Schools.

Indicative visits:

  1. Mr Panagiotis Papastamoulis, Assistant Professor, has paid a visit at the Second Lyceum of Saint Dimitrios on 11th April 2022, and
  2. Mr Ioannis Vrontos, Associate Professor, has paid a visit at the 4th  Lyceum of Acharnes on 12th April 2022.

 

The Educational Visits of Secondary Schools at the premises of AUEB has been carried out with great success, with the following school visits at the facilities of the Athens University Economics and Business:

  • 5th Lyceum of Egaleo
  • 1st Lyceum of Nikea
  • 4th Lyceum of Nea Smyrni
  • 2nd Experimental Lyceum of Lefkada
  • Lyceum of Saint Stefan
  • 1st Lyceum of Papagou
  • 3rd Lyceum of Alimos
  • 19th Lyceum of Athens
  • 6th Lyceum of Zographou
  • Platon Schools, and
  • 10th Lyceum of Piraeus

From the Department of Statistics, Professor Ioannis Ntzoufras, Head of the Department, Professor Dimitrios Karlis, Deputy Head of the Department, Dr Xanthi Pedeli, Assistant Professor, Dr Panagiotis Papastamoulis, Assistant Professor and  Dr Ioannis Vrontos, Associate Professor have been participated in the presentations as hosts. The PhD Students Mr Anastasios Apsemidis, Mrs Panagiota Tsamtsakiri and Mr Ilias Leriou has also presented the phd lab and their work to the students.

The students had the opportunity to understand the value of Statistical Science in the modern era of Data Science, as well as, to see the implementation of statistical science in the social and professional life. The students were also informed of how statistics can have major contribution in specific fields such as Bioinformatics and Genetics.

At the end, students participated in a technology statistics related game with the use of their mobiles, they visited the research laboratory which hosts the PhD students.

The Action was an initiative of the Administration of Department of Statistics, and it was carried out with the valuable contribution of the Secretariat of the Department.
