Research Laboratories are the cornerstone of the research conducted at Athens University of Economics and Business. Their purpose is to carry out high level research and to increase the knowledge that is created by research teams with common or complementary research interests. These Research Laboratories contribute, on the one hand, to the creation of an attractive academic environment with synergies between the laboratories and, on the other, to the development of high quality doctoral theses. Moreover, they serve to promote the research of new, highly qualified members of the Teaching and Research Staff.
Each Research Laboratory belongs to and operates in one of the Departments at AUEB, supports the research priorities and initiatives of the Department (or Departments) to which the members of the Lab belong, and contributes as far as possible to satisfying the teaching needs of the Department. The area of specialization of each Laboratory is directly related to the discipline and specializations of the Department to which it belongs.

According to the European Commission, “the Diploma Supplement (DS) is designed as an aid to support the recognition of academic qualifications. The Diploma Supplement is an important tool of the European Higher Education Area for graduates to ensure that their degrees are recognised by higher education institutions, public authorities and employers in their home countries and abroad.”
The Diploma Supplement provides more information on the type, level, context and content of studies successfully completed by the original degree holder. It should be noted that the DS does not substitute for the actual degree title.
AUEB provides a Diploma Supplement to all holders of study titles at the undergraduate and graduate level. The Diploma Supplement is provided automatically and free of charge during graduation, according to legal requirements.
According to the European Commission, "the ECTS system allows credits taken at one higher education institution to be counted towards a qualification studied for at another. ECTS has been adopted by most of the countries in the European Higher Education Area as the national credit system and is increasingly used elsewhere. ECTS credits represent learning based on defined learning outcomes and their associated workload. It is a central tool in the Bologna Process, which aims to make national education systems more comparable internationally. ECTS also helps make other documents, such as the Diploma Supplement, clearer and easier to use in different countries."
AUEB has been a pioneer in the implementation of the ECTS System since its initial inception. The Department of Business Administration for example has started offering ECTS already in 1989, after having been selected by the European Commission, to participate in the ECTS Pilot Scheme. Experience and knowledge of the system has since been disseminated to all Departments of the University and appropriate use of the system is being made all these years.
All AUEB study programs offer courses for a total of 30 ECTS credits per semester, thus complying fully with the ECTS System. More specific information about ECTS can be located in the Student Handbooks of each study program, as well as inside Diploma Supplements.
AUEB doctoral study programs offer graduates the opportunity to continue with further study after the acquisition of a Master’s degree, in order to earn a PhD. Doctoral studies aim to produce high-level scientific research – with emphasis on scientific publications – and to create scientists capable of contributing to the advancement of science. Our doctoral programmes prepare graduates for careers in academia, industry and the Government in Greece and abroad. At the same time, doctoral programs are sources of academic prestige and international recognition for both Departments and University.
Doctoral Programs offer specialization in the core areas of expertise of each Department, as well as in related fields. Doctoral studies are governed by the relevant Regulation of each AUEB Department; all Departmental Regulations have been officially published online in the Government Gazette.
Applying for Doctoral Studies
Holders of Master’s degrees from Greek Higher Education Institutions, or from international Institutions which have been recognized as equivalent to Greek degrees, are entitled to submit an application for doctoral studies. Under special circumstances, which are specified in the Regulations for Doctoral Studies, an individual who does not hold a Master’s degree may be accepted as a doctoral candidate.
Each Department issues its own Doctoral Studies Regulations, which include all information regarding the time frame for submitting an application; required supporting documents; the procedure for evaluating applications; rights and obligations of doctoral candidates; supervision of the Ph.D. thesis; the completion of doctoral studies, and other relevant information.
