AEGEE - ATHINA
AEGEE ("Association des Etats Generaux des Etudiants de l'Europe") is the largest student association in Europe. It took its name from the Aegean Sea, one of the birthplaces of democracy (thus, the word "AEGEE" is pronounced "EZEE"!), and from the first parliament at the dawn of the French Revolution, "Les Etats Generaux". AEGEE is a voluntary, politically independent and non-profit organisation open to students of all faculties. It basically promotes a unified Europe and a cross-border co-operation and communication among students, striving to create an open and tolerant society of tomorrow.
AEGEE-Athina is one of the first and biggest antennae in Europe. Founded in 1986, it numbers, nowadays, approximately 400 members. Aiming to bring European students closer and to strengthen the idea of students' mobility and communication, the Local of Athina organises a wide range of events in European as well as in local level.
AEGEE-Athina has already organised successfully three Agoras. It has also organised the final conference of the European educational programme "Socrates on the move II" with the participation of 40 students and representatives of the European Committee (April 2002). In the field of Internal Education two European Schools have taken place in Athens, in July 1999 and April 2001. Cultural exchanges are also a very central activity in AEGEE-Athina. AEGEE-Athina has also organised a series of Summer Universities (every year since 1986!). Furthermore, AEGEE-Athina organises twice a year the Athenian School, a trip introducing new members to the AEGEE spirit. Since 2004, AEGEE-Athina organises also a Local Training Course (LTC) that takes place twice a year. Finally, AEGEE-Athina publishes the EUROPOLIS magazine in order to keep new and old members informed.
