Faculty Awards and distinctions

Faculty of AUEB have been receiving academic and professional distinctions internationally. Faculty from the Department of Economics have been among the nominators for the Nobel Prize in Economics. Professor George Avlonitis has been elected President of the European Marketing Academy (EMAC) for the period 2007-2010, while he had also received the best paper award of the Marketing Academy Conference. Professor Tassos Xepapadeas was until recently President of the European Association of Environmental Economists. Professor Gregory Prastacos has been the recipient (1979) of the Edelman Award, the highest distinction awarded by the Institute of Operations Research and Management Science for successful practice of Management Science. Professor Kostas Zografos has been a finalist in the same competition (2005), while for the same work he has been the recipient of the President's Medal from the UK OR Society (2005). Professors Prastacos and Zografos were both honoured (2008) for exceptional achievements in Operations Research by INFORMS, the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science.

Professor Diomidis Spinellis has been the recipient of many awards, including the "Featured Reviewer" award by ACM Computing Reviews (2006), the best books awards for his books by Addison-Wesley (2004, 2006), the prize for "Open Source Projects" of Usenix Association with Compaq Research (2000), the Prize in Computer Science for "Excellence in Academic Achievement", by Addison-Wesley (1990), the Lifetime Achievement Award Usenix Association and UC-Berkeley (1993), etc. Similarly, Associate Professor Ioannis Kontoyiannis has been awarded the Manning endowed assistant professorship (2002), the Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship (2004) and the Honorary Master of Arts Degree "Ad Eundem" (2005) from Brown University in the USA.

Best paper/book awards

Best paper awards have been received by a number of faculty at various occasions, including Professors Spyros Lioukas and Vassilis Papadakis (American Management Association), Professor Nancy Papalexandri and Lecturer Eleni Apospori (American Management Association), Professor Mihalis Zazanis (TIMS), Professor Manolis Kavussanos (Hanjin Prize, International Association of Maritime Economists Conference), Professor George Alogoskoufis (Academy of Athens), Professor Nikos Christodoulakis (University of Cambridge), Professors Gregory Prastacos, George Ioannou and Chris Tarantilis jointly with graduate students (Chinese Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management Conference), Professor Ioannis Katsoulakos (Corporate Governance Journal), Professor Diomidis Spinellis (SANE Conference), Professor George Ioannou (Microsoft Excellence in Teaching), Associate Professor Spyros Gounaris (ANBAR, Industrial Marketing Management), Assistant Professor Ioanna Minoglou (Ottoman Bank Archive and Research Centre for the Competition for Research on History of Banking and Finance), Assistant Professor Ioannis Ntzoufras (best doctoral dissertation award from the Hellenic Statistics Institute) and others.

Editorial positions

AUEB faculty have also extensive activity in editorial positions of international journals. Professor Nikos Vettas is Αssociate Editor of the "Journal of the European Economic Association", the "Journal of Industrial Economics", and of the "International Journal of Industrial Organization". Professor Tassos Xepapadeas is Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Environment and Development Economics", Associate Editor of "Studies in Non Linear Dynamics and Econometrics", while he has served as Co-editor of the "Journal of Environmental Economics and Μαmanagement", and Associate Editor of "Environmental and Resource Economics" and "Water Resources Research". Professor George Doukidis has served as member of the Editorial Board of a number of journals, including .Journal of Strategic Information Systems", "Journal of Decision Systems", and "International Journal of Electronic Markets". He has also served as Guest Editor of various journals, including the "Journal of the OR Society", the "European Journal of Information Systems", the "International Journal of Electronic Commerce, and the "Supply Chain Management: An International Journal".

Professor Gregory Prastacos has served as Editor-at-Large of Interfaces, while he is currently member of the Editorial Boards of the "International Journal on Information Technology and Management", the "European Journal on International Management" and the journal "Operations Research, An International Journal". Professor Kostas Zografos is member of the Editorial boards of "Transportation Research PART C", "Operational Research: An International Journal", "Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory Journal", and "International Journal of Logistics Economics and Globalisation". Professor Apostolos Refenes was Associate Editor of the "Intelligent Systems in Accounting and Finance", the "International Journal of Computational Intelligence & Organisations", Guest Editor of the "Journal of Forecasting", editor of the series Studies in Computational Finance (Kluwer), and member of the Editorial Board of "Neural Computing & Applications". Professor Dimitris Ghicas is on the Editorial Board of "The International Journal of Accounting". Professor George Avlonitis is member of the Editorial board of various journals, including the "Journal of Business Research", the "European Journal of Marketing" and the "Industrial Marketing Management."

Professor Manolis Kavusanos is member of the Editorial Advisory Board of "Transportation Research Part E" (The Logistics and Transportation Review), "International Journal of Maritime Economics", "International Annals of Maritime Studies", and has served as Guest Editor in the journal "Transportation Research Part E" (special issue on Shipping Finance and Port Issues), and in the "International Journal of Maritime Economics" (special issue Shipping Markets and Developments). Professor Evdokia Xekalaki is Chief Editor of the journal "Quality Technology and Quantitative Management" and member of the Editorial Board of the "Journal of Applied Stochastic Models in Business and Industry".

Professor George Polyzos is on the editorial board of the journal "Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing" and has served as Guest editor of the journals "IEEE Personal Communications", "ACM Mobile Networking", "IEEE Journal" and "Computer Networks", while Professor Panos Hatzipanayotou is on the editorial council of "Economia". Professor Thanos Skouras has served as Editor of the "Thames Papers in Political Economy" and has also served in the Editorial Boards of the "British Review of Economic Issues","Greek Economic Review", "International Review of Applied Economics" and "International Papers in Political Economy".

Professor Petros Dellaportas is an Associate Editor for "Statistical Modelling: An International Journal" and "Statistics and Computing", and has served as Associate Editor for the "Journal of the Royal Statistics Society, Series D." Professor George Kouretas has served on the editorial board of the "Review of International Economics", the "Journal of International Money and Finance", the "International Journal of Finance and Economics", the "Open Economies Review", and the "Journal of Common Market Studies".

Professor Diomidis Spinellis is on the Editorial Board of the journal "IEEE Software" and his book on Open Code has been translated to 7 languages (including English, Russian Chinese, Japanese, etc). Associate Professor Ioannis Kontoyiannis is an Associate Editor of the "IEEE Transactions on Information Theory", and a member of the Editorial Boards of the "Quarterly of Applied Mathematics" of the American Mathematical Society, and of the e-journal "Entropy". Associate Professor Eric Klas Soderquist was until recently Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Cahiers du Management Technologique", and is currently Editor-in-Chief of the InnKnow Forum, published by AUEB's Management Science Laboratory.

Professor George Ioannou is member of the Editorial Board of the journal "Production Planning & Control", while Associate Professor George Giaglis is on the editorial boards of several journals, including the "International Journal of Mobile Communications" and the "Business Process Management Journal". Similarly, Associate Professor Nancy Pouloudi is Associate Editor of the "European Journal of Information Systems", and of "Information Technology and People", and member of various editorial Boards. Associate Professor Mihalis Vazirgiannis is Member of the Editorial board of "Intelligent Data Analysis-An International Journal.", while Associate Professor Christos Tarantilis has been a Guest Editor (with Assoc. Professor Diomidis Spinellis) of the "IEEE Intelligent Systems" (special issue on Advanced Heuristics in Transportation and Logistics).

Assistant Professor Phoebe Kountouri is Associate Editor of the "Environment and Development Economics", "The Open Agricultural Journal" and "Open Agricultural Reviews", while Assistant Professor Nikos Bozionelos is Co-Editor of the "Career Development International" and of the "Careers Forum". Assistant Professor Yiannis Spanos is on the Editorial Boards of "Organization Studies" and of the "International Journal of Business Environment", and Assistant Professor Dimitris Karlis is Associate editor of the "Metron Journal".

Professional Distinctions

Professionally, AUEB faculty have achieved very high distinctions in both the public and the private sector. Professor George Alogoskoufis has served as Minister of Economics and Finance of Greece, while Professor Nikos Christodoulakis has served as Minister of Economics and Finance of Greece as well as Minister of Development. Professor Yiannis Panaretos is the current Deputy Minister of Education of Greece, and has previously served as Secretary General of the same Ministry. Professor George Zanias is the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, and has previously served as Secretary General of the Ministry of Economics and Finance, while Professor Yiannis Tzoannos is currently serving as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Shipping.

Professor Nikos Vettas is member of the Economic Advisory Group for Competition Policy, European Commision, Brussels, Professor Eleni Louri is the Deputy Director of the Bank of Greece, and Professor Ploutarchos Sakellaris is a Vice-President of EBRD, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Professor Spyros Lioukas was the Ambassador of Greece in the OECD. Professors Ioannis Katsoulakos, Nikos Vettas, Vassilis Patsouratis, and Apostolos Refenes have served as full members of the Greek Competition Agency, while Professor Tryfon Kollintzas served as advisor to the President of the European Commission, Romano Pronti, and is currently CEO of the Bank of Attica. Professor Takis Korliras is the Chairman of KEPE, the Center for Economic Research and Planning, and has served as Vice-Chairman of the Bank of Greece, and Chairman of the Ionian Bank. Professor Nikos Baltas has served as Chairman of the Hellenic Railroad Organization (OSE), while Professor Evangelos Magirou was on the Board of Directors of the Public Power Corporation. Professor Gregory Prastacos has served as Chairman (non-executive) of Deloitte & Touche Consulting (Greece), and Professor George Doukidis has served as Chairman of Taneos, a well-known VC firm. Professor Manolis Giakoumakis has served as Chairman of the National Telecommunications and Post Commission of Greece, the Greek National in Regulatory Authority, and as Secretary General for Communications the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Professor George Venieris, who has served as President of the European Accounting Association (2000-01), and has served as Chairman of the Experts Committee of the Council of Competitiveness and Development, and also as Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the modification and enhancement of the Tax Code.

Leadership in International Conferences

AUEB faculty have been very active in organizing, and/or participating in international conferences, presenting the state-of-the-art results of research. It is almost impossible to list all conference leadership activities undertaken by the AUEB faculty in the recent years. We will mention only a few, indicative conferences.

Professor Ioannis Katsoulakos has been organizing the Annual Competition and Regulation European Summer School and Conference for the last years, Professor Manolis Kavussanos will be co-chairing the 2008 Conference of the European Finance Association, while Professors George Avlonitis and Nikos Papavasileiou will be heading the 2008 GSSI Conference.

Professor George Doukidis was the Co-Chairman of the International Conference of the Decision Sciences Institute (1999), and a keynote speaker of the International Conference of INFORMS (2005). He has also participated in the program or organizing committees of many other conferences, including the European Conference on Information Systems (1994, 1997), the International Electronic Commerce Conference (1998, 2001), and the International Conference on Information Systems (1995). Professor Nancy Papalexandri has been the coordinator (2005-2008) for the Greek part of the pan-European research project on European Comparative Human Resource Management conducted under the coordination of Cranfield University. Professor Gregory Prastacos chaired an AUEB Conference on Innovation (2003), and has been member of the organizing committee of the International Conference of the Decision Sciences Institute (1999), and of the European Conference LILIS (EC DG III) "Continuing Education in the Information Society" (1996). Professor George Polyzos has served as Co-chair of the Program Committee of the 6th IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Multimedia Communications (1999).

Professor Costas Courcoubetis was a member of the program committees of various international conferences, including INFOCOMM 99, ITC99, ΑΤΜ2000, SPIE2000, ITC2001, a key-note speaker at IS&N2000 on Pricing the Internet, and a session organizer and chairman at various conferences and workshops. Professor George Venieris was Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 24th Annual Conference of the European Accounting Association (2001), and Professor Panos Hatzipanayotou has served as member of the organizing or program committees of a number of conferences, including the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (2007), and others.

Associate Professor Nancy Pouloudi has chaired the first European conference ETHICOMP (2004), as well as a number of international workshops or conference tracks. Associate Professor George Giaglis is the Permanent Secretary of the annual International Conference on Mobile Business, and a member of the organizing committees of many conferences on mobile business. Similarly, Associate Professor Mihalis Vazirgiannis has been a member of the organizing committees of a large number of conferences such as VLDB, ACM CICM, ACM SIGDOC, and IEEE Multimedia, while Associate Professor Ioannis Kontoyiannis has served on the conference program committees of the IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT 2008, ISIT 2009), the IEEE Information Theory Workshop (ITW 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008), the International Conference on Performance Evaluation and others.

Associate Professor Diomidis Spinellis has served on the program committees of many conferences, including the International Workshop on Global Software Development for the Practitioner (2006), the conference Libre Software as a Matter of Research (2007), the Second International Workshop on Public Data about Software Development (2007), the Second Annual Workshop on Digital Forensics & Incident Analysis (2007), and many others.

Assistant Professor Phoebe Koundouri has been very active in conferences. Among other conferences, she has served as member of the organizing committee of a Workshops in Switzerland (2007), and Greece (2006), and member of the organizing committee of the Annual Conferences of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (2000 -2008). Assistant Professor Angeliki Poulimenakou has been a member of the program committees of the important ICIS and ECIS conferences, and a member of the organizing committee of the IFIP conference (2003). Assistant Professor Stelios Psarakis will be chairing the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics Conference (2008).
